Steavenson's Ferns
As a youth group leader a few years ago, my husband and I drove up to Marysville to hike with a bunch of kids. I’m always on the lookout for potential paintings with my rather heavy camera in hand and I came across these magnificent tree ferns quite close to the actual falls. I took reference photos and put together “Steavenson's Ferns” a little while later.
Steavensons Falls is a 3 km drive along Falls Rd to a car park in Marysville Australia. From there it is an easy 700 metre walk from Falls Rd up to the waterfall. It is where you will see one of Victoria’s highest waterfalls. This is where I found the inspiration for this painting. I tried to capture the true scale and beauty of the landscape. The tree ferns were truly breathtaking looking up the valley towards the top of the mountain. Unfortunately this area was devastated by the Black Saturday fires in 2009 and Tea-tree has taken its place. The area may never recover these magnificent ferns and our landscapes are forever changing but this painting has captured these beauties before the fires.
